Train FB Marketplace
As you may know, I am the QUEEN of thrifting. I check Facebook Marketplace daily (sometimes multiple times a day). I really know how to work it to get what you want and I’m going to teach you to do the same. This will make your shopping experience more precise and efficient.
What you’re doing here is teaching the algorithm what you want to see.
And when you want to see changes, you can teach it again.
Let’s say you’re shopping for a sofa. Here’s what you do:
1) Go to FB Marketplace. Make sure your location and distance settings are correct (are you willing to drive 50 miles for something?). At the top, you’ll see a tagged location. Click on it, enter YOUR zip code, and then set a radius that suits you.
2) Search for the item you are shopping for. I.e. “sofa” and click search. When you’ve finished these instructions, you can also come back to this step and search “couch”, “sectional”, “love seat” - whatever could yield the results you want.
3) Click on the results. In this example, click on a sofa that comes up in your local area (open up the ad and look at it). FB knows when you click on items. The more of the same items you click on, the more they will show you. This is the training part. You’re saying “hey, Facebook - I’m looking for a sofa. Please show me more of these”.
My FB Marketplace knows that I will buy furniture, women’s clothing, and anything brass. It shows me these posts over other ones (and I like it that way). If you and your friend/partner open up your FB Marketplace results (the suggested, without searching anything), you’ll likely see different results - especially if you’ve use Marketplace before (i.e. clicked on items). I get marble bookends and my partner gets Jeep Wranglers.
4) Watch your suggested items cater to your needs. Yeah - when you open up FB Marketplace after doing this, it will be working for you, not against you. You’ve now trained it to give you what you want.
A note:
You can train and re-train. You can train it to show you multiple things. So, if you’re doing a bathroom remodel and looking for a sink and vanity and towel bar, you can do these steps for all of those items and it still works.
HACK: You can also take some time, after setting your location correctly, to search a few things you would like to see in the future. Certain keywords will always yield results I’d like to see, so I use these words as search terms to teach FB what I want to see more of. Some search terms you could use (search individually):
-Marble
-Brass
-Chandelier
-Vintage
-Lamp
-Traditional
-Mirror
AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON MIRRORS:
If you haven’t trained your FB Marketplace to show you mirrors for sale,
stop everything and do that immediately.
